A Promise Worth a Thousand Pieces of Gold
A historical picture book inspired by Han-dynasty pictorial stones, made with paper cutting, rubbing, and watercolor.
About the book
Set during the transition from the Qin to the Han dynasty, the book retells the origin of the Chinese saying “a promise is worth a thousand pieces of gold.” It follows Ji Bu, a general known for keeping his word even when his fortunes change.
Artist’s note
I was drawn to the strength and directness of Han pictorial stones. Instead of copying them, I cut paper, made rubbings, and added watercolor, looking for a way to bring their ancient rhythm onto a contemporary page.
