About the book
A mysterious map leads the protagonists across deserts, the Gobi, and the Mongolian steppe. Along the way they encounter builders, soldiers, traders, migrating animals, and the living history of the Great Wall.
Artist’s note
I spent five years on this book. Research trips from Inner Mongolia to Qinghai helped me understand the scale of the northwest—the wind, the distance, and the long stretches of silence. It was one of the most demanding books I have made, and one of the most important to me.
