About the book
Originating in China’s Spring and Autumn period, the story follows the difficult relationship between a stepmother and her stepson. Misunderstanding slowly gives way to compassion and recognition.
Artist’s note
I built the pictures from cut and torn rice paper, keeping the shapes simple and the colors bright. The handmade surfaces helped me hold the distance of an ancient story and the immediacy of a child’s feelings on the same page.
